When your first starting a blog, Search Engine Optimization can be super intimidating. I don`t know how many times I found myself confused and frustrated trying to make our posts rank higher on google. Lucky for you, we have learned a ton of key SEO techniques that will increase traffic and promote your blog.
Finding The Right Keyword
Finding the right keyword is one of the most important SEO techniques we have learned over the past few years. The truth of the matter is; you can have all your keywords in all the right places but if no one is searching for those keywords.. it really doesn’t do you any good. So how do you know what people are searching for? There is a great free tool called Ubersuggest that allows you to type in a keyword and see how frequantly it’s searched for in google. We recommend doing this research BEFORE you write your post. That way you can cater your posts to your target audience since you already know exactly what they’ll be searching for .
As a new blogger; you want to choose a keyword with a low to average search volume(minimum 250) and an easy to moderate difficulty. You can typically do this by using longer and more specific keywords. For example; If you type “Thailand” into google, what comes up? Trip Advisor, Lonely Planet and a ton of other huge websites and companies. Trying to compete with these massive brands as a new blogger isn`t going to get you very far; plain and simple.
What you need to do is focus in on the more specific words that your target audience is typing into google. If you write a post about “scuba diving in Thailand” or “volunteering in Thailand”, those longer and more specific keywords will give you a much higher chance to rank on the first page of a search engine. You are also creating a more specific niche in each of your posts which is SO important in setting your blog apart from the rest.
Inserting The Keyword into Your Post
So now that you have a specific keyword within your search range; where do you put it? The truth is there are TONS of places on your website for you to insert this keyword that will increase your SEO for a specific topic. These include:
- The title of your post
- The URL
- The first paragraph
- Headings and Subheadings
- Throughout your post
- The file name of all photos
- The description of all photos
You will also want to add related keywords and phrases into your post. These phrases are similar to your main keywords but slightly different or in different context. For example; if my keywords are “volunteering in Thailand” my related keywords could be “being a volunteer in Thailand” or “volunteer opportunities in Thailand”. Having these related keywords will increase your SEO ranking on google.
Checking Your SEO Techniques
Improving your SEO results on any search engine will not happen overnight. It will most likely take a month or two before these changes you have made are recognized. In the meantime; you can download a free plugin like Yoast SEO to show you how you are doing. It will tell you if you have used your keywords enough and where you can improve your search engine optimization on each post.
