Home to the original 7 mile cave tubing; Ian Anderson`s Caves Branch has been one of the leading adventure companies in Belize for over 20 years. The Black Hole Drop is a signature tour located right on the property; which covers 58,000 acres of land. This tour was one of our favorites in all of Belize and is PERFECT for all you adrenaline junkies out there! A hike through the jungle takes you to a large sinkhole where you rappel 300 feet down into the forested caves below. Keep reading for everything you need to know about The Black Hole Drop!

We started the day with a 10 minute jeep ride followed by one hour of hiking through the Maya Mountains. Exploring the jungle was fantastic and our guide was very knowledgeable on local plant and animal species. They provided water for each of us which we carried in a backpack along with our helmet and harness. The only things you need to bring for The Black Hole Drop Tour are sturdy shoes (NO sandals), long pants, and bug spray.

A few much needed water breaks and some steep hills later.. we made it to the top! The sinkhole is an area of the Actun Loch Tunich Cave that collapsed many years ago. From the edge it drops straight down 300 feet with an entire ecosystem growing below. After getting suited up we went over all of the equipment, safety features and what to expect. The guides were very thorough and made us feel comfortable and safe.

Nothing left to do now but start rappelling.. stepping back over the edge was incredibly exhilarating! Our guide cheered us on the whole way giving us tips on where to step and how to hold the rope. After about 20 feet of rappelling you can take your feet off the wall, sit up in your harness and enjoy the view. For the next 200 feet you will experience an unobstructed view of the crater, the surrounding caves and the vegetation. Lastly you will sail down through the trees and land safely on the bottom. Absolutely spectacular!

From the bottom; we hiked through the sinkhole to a cave where we had a picnic lunch. Our guide had all the fixings for a build your own burrito and it was superb. The best (and the first) cave burrito we`ve ever had! We learned a bit more about the history of the caves in the area, chatted with our group and enjoyed the food.

Once lunch was finished; we made our way out of the cave and up to a ladder. The walk through the sinkhole is truly picturesque. Imagine that lush jungle you thought you would only ever see in movies or national geographic.. that`s where you are! Once we reached the ladder; we climbed out of the sinkhole and started the hike back down. After about 45 minutes we were in the vehicle and on our way back to Caves Branch!
